SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES PARTICIPATE IN ANNUAL POLAR BEAR PLUNGE

Upper Marlboro, MD… Seven members of the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office, including Chief Assistant Sheriff Darrin Palmer, took to the chilly waters of the Chesapeake Bay last Friday for the 16th Annual Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy Point State Park.


Friday’s event launched the first Law Enforcement (only) Polar Bear Plunge and Prince George’s County sheriff’s deputies joined approximately 2,500 fellow law enforcement officers to support the Maryland Special Olympics. Members of the Sheriff’s Office raised over $1,000.00 in just 48 hours.                 

Sgt. Shawn Davenport, who has participated in each of the 16 plunges, said “In all the years I have participated in this event, this year’s was by far the warmest – the warmest day, the warmest water temperature, and especially the warmest crowd.  The people who showed up to participate and give their support were so kind and generous, making it all the more worthwhile.”

Colonel Palmer said “It was wonderful to see such support from law enforcement throughout the state for Special Olympics.  I was very proud.”

Several members of the Sheriff’s Office also returned to Sandy Point State Park on Saturday, January 28 to take the plunge a second time, joining approximately 15,000 other supporters.

Joint Operation of Sheriff Deputies and U.S. Marshals results in Arrest of Armed Robbery Suspect in New York


Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Warrant Squad reported the arrest of Linda McCorkle, who was wanted for an Armed Robbery warrant. The warrant was obtained by a Prince George’s County Police Detective of the District I, Robbery Suppression Team (RST) on January 19, 2012 and forwarded to the Sheriff’s Office.
                             
Combined investigative efforts with RST, gave indication
that McCorkle had fled to the New York/New Jersey area.
The Warrant Squad coordinated with the New York based United States Marshals Service, who conducted an investigation, and subsequently arrested McCorkle at a location in Harlem.

McCorkle was wanted in connection with an armed robbery of an elderly woman that occurred on January 12, 2012 at the Bank of America on New Hampshire Avenue in Hyattsville, Maryland.

Pending an extradition hearing McCorkle will be extradited back to Prince George’s County.

Deputies Arrest Attempted Murder Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest last night of Theo Alton Mitchell, for a Second Degree Attempted Murder warrant issued on December 6, 2011.
According to charging documents, Mitchell confronted a male victim outside of a Temple Hills 7-11 convenience store on November 1, 2011, and during the confrontation struck the victim about the head and face with an unknown object. The victim was transported to the Prince George’s Hospital Center and treated for life threatening injuries.

Mitchell was located by sheriff’s deputies, and arrested without incident in the 1800 block of Thomas Rd., in Fort Washington, MD.  District IV county police detectives were notified of the arrest. Mitchell is charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, and Reckless Endangerment, and is being held at the Prince George’s County Detention Center on a $375,000 bond.

Warrant Deputies Arrest Attempted First Degree Murder Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division, working in partnership with the U.S. Marshall’s Warrant Task Force, reported the arrest last Friday January 20, 2012, of Anthony Davis for an Attempted First Degree Murder warrant.  The warrant was applied for by the Prince George’s County Police Department on October 15, 2011.  Davis was arrested by the Warrant Task Force in the 2200 block of Savannah Terrace in South East, Washington D.C.

According to charging documents, Davis shot a male victim in the buttocks while they were in the area of Cindy Lane, in Capitol Heights, MD.  Davis is charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Use of a Firearm during a Felony Crime, Second Degree Assault, and Possession of a Handgun.

Detectives from the Prince George’s County Police Department have been notified of Davis’ arrest.  The suspect will be transferred to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections, from the District of Columbia, by the Sheriff’s Transport Division.

Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest Suspect Wanted in Three Maryland Counties

Upper Marlboro, MDThe Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Warrant Squad reported the arrest yesterday of Robert Gandy who was wanted in three Maryland Counties.  Gandy was wanted on seven outstanding warrants for Assault, Failure to comply with a Peace Order, Outstanding Child Support (Contempt), and Theft charges issued between October and November of 2011 in Anne Arundel County, Prince George’s County, and Calvert County.


A tip leading to Gandy’s arrest was received by the Prince George’s County Crime Solvers, Inc tip line and directed to the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s deputies investigated one of two addresses provided, which led to Gandy’s arrest in the 8400 block of Hamlin Street in Glenarden, Maryland.
The Prince George’s County warrant for Gandy issued in November 2011 was for Violation of Probation, Theft over $500.00.

“This is a great example of information that exists in communities and which can impact the public’s safety. Crime Solvers is an outstanding partner and continues to facilitate cooperation and communications between law enforcement and citizens,” said Chief Assistant Sheriff Darrin Palmer. “It’s a partnership model that works and we are thankful for the good tip,” he said.
Gandy was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections where he is currently being held.

Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest Attempted Murder Suspect


Upper Marlboro, MD… The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Sunday, January 15, 2012, of Michael Darnell Brown for an Attempted Murder warrant obtained by the Hyattsville City Police Department (HCPD) on January 14, 2012. Brown was taken into custody without incident near the 6800 block of Middlefield Road in Fort Washington, MD.

According to charging documents, a male victim, who had just arrived at his residence, was confronted by Brown about a domestic related issue. In the confrontation that subsequently turned physical, Brown allegedly stabbed the victim in the back several times. The victim was taken to Washington Hospital Center and treated for his injuries.

Sheriff’s Deputies notified Hyattsville City Police detectives of the arrest. Brown has been charged with First Degree Attempted Murder and is currently being held by the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections on a “No Bond” status.

First Degree Assault Suspect Arrested by Sheriff’s Deputies

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Sunday of Willis Lewis of Suitland, MD. for a First Degree Assault warrant. The warrant, dated January 4, 2012, alleges that on January 3, Lewis was involved in a physical confrontation with his wife, in which he threatened to kill her and her children.

According to the warrant, Lewis threatened to blow up the residence and attempted to start a fire before the victim was able to gather her children and exit the residence.

Lewis is currently being held by the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections on a $50,000 bond and has been charged with First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and Threatening Arson.
