Sheriff's Office Supports 24th Annual Christmas in April

Upper Marlboro, MD… Sixteen sheriff’s deputies from the Sheriff’s Office participated in the 24th Annual Christmas in April program on Saturday at the home of an elderly couple in Lanham, Maryland.  The rest of the team – for a total of 26 volunteers – was comprised of members of the Maryland Christian Fellowship.

Volunteers painted the shutters, the wrought iron fence, porch railing and window grates; put mulch down in the flower beds; and made repairs to the deck and fence around the property.  A team of volunteers went to the home the previous weekend to power wash the exterior of the home and the second story deck to facilitate the repair work scheduled to take place this past Saturday.

The homeowners, an elderly couple, expressed their gratitude for being selected by Christmas in April. “Since receiving a pacemaker I am simply not able to do this type of work to my home anymore.  The Christmas in April program is a blessing, and it is exciting to see such a large gathering of workers from the Sheriff’s Office and Christian Fellowship,” said the homeowner.  “Without their assistance we would never have been able to prepare our home for the upcoming summer; we simply cannot afford to hire a contractor.”

“The Christmas in April program, like so many volunteer programs in the County, provides an opportunity to help others in the true spirit of giving and sharing,” said Sheriff Melvin C. High, who stopped by to meet the homeowners.
