Sheriff’s 3rd Annual Summer Youth Academy Session I Begins


Upper Marlboro, MD…. Chief Assistant Sheriff Darrin Palmer, Lieutenant Colonel Roccapriore and Captain Nancy Ridgely greeted cadets Monday as the Community Partnership Section started the first of its two Summer Youth Academy (SYA) sessions at Thurgood Marshall Middle School. 

During the two week sessions, Sheriff’s Deputies and Sheriff’s Explorers will engage the cadets in fitness routines, group seminar styled sessions on topics such as etiquette, problem-solving, bullying, good decision making, gangs, substance abuse. In addition, the camp schedule includes  weekly educational and experiential field trips. 

“It is our goal to make sure they leave the D.A.Y. Corps with a better understanding of themselves, good citizenship and law enforcement, and, of course, have some fun while doing so” said Sergeant Paul Washington, SYA Director.

The second session of the Summer Youth Academy is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 21st.
