Deputies Arrest Felony Assault Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Monday of Harry Bose Jr. on an arrest warrant for First Degree Assault obtained by Sheriff’s Domestic Violence Intervention Division (DVID) deputies on July 1, 2013.

According to the warrant, Bose picked up a female victim from an unknown address in Kettering, MD, on July 1, 2013. The warrant further advised that after the victim got into Bose’s vehicle, Bose immediately began punching her in the face with closed fists, knocking out two of her teeth. As the victim attempted to exit the vehicle, Bose allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed her in the left forearm and hand causing multiple injuries. Sheriff’s DVID deputies responded to the scene to meet with the victim, conducted an investigation, and subsequently sought charges for Bose.

Warrant deputies investigating Bose’s whereabouts were led to a residence in the 400 block of 71^st. St. in Seat Pleasant, MD, where they located and apprehended him without incident.

DVID deputies were notified of the arrest, and Bose was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with First and Second Degree Assault.

Child Support Deputies Scale Fence to Apprehend Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Child Support Enforcement Division reported the arrest last Thursday of Joseph Jones for three outstanding Child Support Writs issued on June 5, 2013. According to the Child Support Enforcement Administration Jones owes $101,835.93 in back child support in three cases.

After several attempts of locating Jones at an address listed on the warrant that was later determined to be vacant, Deputies investigating his whereabouts were led to a residence in the 1700 block of Village Green Drive in Landover, MD where they were invited in by an adult female. Deputies observed Jones in the backyard of the residence and attempted to apprehend him. Jones fled on foot, jumped over a barbed wire fence and ran into a wooded area behind the home. Deputies pursued and apprehended Jones in the 7200 block of Martin Luther King Highway in Landover, MD.

Jones was transported to the Prince George’s County Hospital Center for lacerations to his chest and left hand from the barbed wire fence, after which he was treated and released. He was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Warrant Deputies arrest Attempted First Degree Murder Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Thursday of  Leopold Rankine on an arrest warrant for  two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder obtained by County Police.

According to the warrant, on July 16, 2010, Rankine approached a vehicle in the 5600 block of Kennedy Street, Riverdale, MD, produced a knife and began stabbing his wife, who was one of the two occupants in the vehicle. The warrant further states that Rankine stabbed the other passenger when he attempted to intervene and fled the scene.

Deputies investigating Rankine’s whereabouts were led to the 2900 Block of Lakebrook Circle in Baltimore, MD, where they located and apprehended him without incident.

Rankine is being held at the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections and is also charged with an additional count of Attempted First Degree Murder and two counts of First Degree Assault and Second Degree Assault.

Violent Offender Warrant Sweep Includes 19 Detainers

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Warrant/Fugitive Division, boosted the number of warrants it served as it continued the Violent Offender Warrant Sweep (VOWS) that began the weekend of July 13-14, made possible with a grant from the Governor’s Office on Crime Control and Prevention. 

The first weekend which included additional law enforcement personnel from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies began with outstanding results with 85 arrests to close 104 warrants.  In last weekend’s operation, another seven arrests to close fifteen warrants brought the operations totals to 92 arrests to close 129 warrants.

The Warrant Division has also filed 19 Detainers since the operation began.  A Detainer is filed for crimes for which a suspect may be extradited from another jurisdiction where that jurisdiction has the suspect of the warrant in custody. The Detainer asks the other jurisdiction to “detain” the suspect pending extradition by the Sheriff’s Office.  A Detainer also indicates that the suspect’s case has not been adjudicated before the courts in Prince George’s County.  

Of the 19 detainers, the most serious include a Violation of Probation for First Degree Murder, Attempted Murder, Child Abuse, Armed Robbery, and First Degree Assault. The seven additional warrants closed included 2 Assaults, 3 Thefts, a Robbery, and 1 for Sex Offense.

Deputies Apprehend Attempted Kidnapping Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Monday of Diego C. Sam on an arrest warrant for Attempted Kidnapping obtained by Metro Transit Police detectives on July 15, 2013.

According to the warrant, the female victim was waiting at a bus stop in the 7000 block of Highview Terr. in Hyattsville, MD, when Sam drove up and offered her a ride. After the victim declined the offer Sam parked his vehicle and approached her. The warrant further advises that Sam allegedly assaulted the victim and attempted to force her to go with him. Following a struggle, the victim was able to free herself and call police. Sam subsequently ran back to his vehicle and fled the scene.

Deputies investigating Sam’s whereabouts were led to the 8100 block of 15^th Ave. in Hyattsville, MD, where they located and apprehended him without incident.

Sam was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Attempted Kidnapping, Second Degree Assault and False Imprisonment.

Violent Offender Warrant Sweep Closes 104 Warrants

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Warrant/Fugitive Division, with $125k grant from the Governor’s Office on Crime Control and Prevention, kicked off a multi-week operation focusing on violent crime offenders. The Violent Offender Warrant Sweep was a county-wide operation with deputies on the street late Sunday night through Monday morning.

Twelve warrant teams, from federal, state and local agencies, partnered in the opening sweep which included over 60 law enforcement officers, including Sheriff’s Deputies, U.S. Marshals, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Maryland State Police (MSP), Capitol Heights Police, New Carrollton Police, Cheverly Police, Glenarden Police and Greenbelt Police.  The Public Safety Communications Mobile Command Post was used for strategic planning and radio communications for the operation, which lasted more than 10 hours.

The twelve teams went to  250 residences with the goal of closing over 200 violent crime warrants. The operation resulted in 85 arrests to close 104 warrants.  Among the charges of the 85 arrests were 44 first and second degree assaults, 10 Thefts, 7 Domestic Violence-related, five gun-related, two burglaries, and one each of robbery and rape.

Deputies also recovered two handguns and made an additional arrest for Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, which was subsequently referred to the County Police Narcotic Enforcement Division.

Sheriff Melvin C. High said, “We appreciate the support and confidence of the Governor’s Office on Crime Control and Prevention (GOCCP). This support gives us the resources to go out with a significant number of freshly re-investigated violent crime warrants with a hugely improved opportunity for success in apprehending the most violent criminals, and ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens and residents.”

Captain William Mints, Assistant Bureau Chief of Field Operations and operational manager of the initiative said, “We are very pleased coming out of the starting gate on this operation with 85 arrests. The partnership and cooperation with our partners add enormous capacity as we continue our commitment to an overall strategy that is focused on capturing violent offenders. It’s a great way to begin.”

Community Partnerships Section Wraps Up the First of Two Summer Camp Sessions

The Community Partnerships Section (CPS) finished the first round of its annual “Deputies Assisting Youth (D.A.Y.) Corps Summer Program” Friday at Oxon Hill Middle School.

The camp, which is in its second year, encourages middle school students to participate in group sessions for bully prevention, etiquette, proper grooming and positive self-image. During the two week program deputies inspire students to gain the confidence needed for vital transitional periods in life, as well as staying active and healthy while making new friends with similar interests.

“The program is designed to mentor and engage the young people” said Corporal Damen Smalls of the CPS “We help them strengthen their communication skills in school, at home, and in their communities. The program opens doors to new experiences and opportunities for their future.”

The first session included various guest speakers, and field trips to the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.

The summer program is an extension of the Office of the Sheriff’s partnership with the county school system to provide mentoring to students in eight Prince George’s County Middle Schools: G. James Gholson, Benjamin Stoddert, Oxon Hill, Thurgood Marshall, Drew Freeman, James Madison, Stephen Decatur and Thomas Johnson.

The D.A.Y. Corps’ second session will be held Monday, July 22^nd – August 2^nd, at Drew Freeman Middle School.

Deputies Arrest Forestville Woman for Attempted Murder

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Domestic Violence Intervention Division reported the arrest Saturday of Charnell Francise Gant for Attempted First Degree Murder which occurred in Forestville, MD on July 6, 2013.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call for assistance at a residence in the 6500 block of Hilmar Dr., when they observed a male victim suffering from a laceration to his lower right abdomen. The victim told deputies that Charnell Gant stabbed him with a butcher-styled knife following a verbal dispute. Deputies contacted Fire/EMS personnel to assist the victim with his injuries. Following an on-scene investigation, deputies placed Gant under arrest, charging her with Attempted Murder. During the investigation, deputies recovered the knife used during the alleged incident hidden near a neighbor’s residence.

The victim was transported to Prince George’s Hospital for medical treatment and Gant was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Attempted First Degree Murder.

Warrant Deputies Arrest Murder Suspect in 2008 Temple Hills Homicide

(Suspect turned over to Police Detectives)

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest today of Maurice Braswell on an arrest warrant for First Degree Murder obtained by the County Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) on July 1, 2013.

According to the warrant, Braswell shot a male victim outside of a residential party in the 6300 block of Arwen Court in Fort Washington, MD in June of 2008.  Braswell allegedly fled the scene following the incident.

Deputies located Braswell at a 28^th Avenue business office in Temple Hills, MD; deputies identified and apprehended him without incident. Braswell was transported to CID detectives.

In addition to First Degree Murder, Braswell is also charged with Second Degree Murder, Handgun on Person, and Handgun Use during a Felonious Violent Crime.

Deputies Arrest Attempted Murder Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Wednesday of Ramone Watkins on an arrest warrant for 2^nd Degree Attempted Murder, obtained by County Police District I detectives on June 26, 2013.

According to the warrant, Watkins was involved in a verbal argument at his residence in the 5300 block of 67^th Ave. in Riverdale, MD, with a male victim, on June 20, 2013. Following the argument, Watkins allegedly stabbed the victim in the neck with a box cutter and fled the scene. It is unclear whether the victim, who is a relative of Watkins, resided at the above address.

Deputies investigating Watkins’s whereabouts located and apprehended him at his residence in the 5300 block of 67^th Ave. in Riverdale, MD.

District I detectives were notified of Watkins’s arrest and he was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Attempted 2^nd Degree Murder, First and Second Degree Assault, and Possession of a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to Injure.
