Sheriff Hosts “Purple Light Nights®” Lighting Ceremony

County Partners United Against Domestic Violence in Awareness Campaign

Upper Marlboro, MD… For the third year, the Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff will host the “Purple Light Nights ®” (PLN) lighting ceremony on October 3, 2016 to begin Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Sheriff High said the “Purple Light Nights®” lighting ceremony begins a month of events conducted by many of the partners who serve families impacted by domestic violence to raise awareness and alert people to all the resources available for families who need assistance. “Purple Light Nights® is a community event that brings all our partners together with the community to promote the ideal that our community stands united in the fight against domestic violence,” said Sheriff High.

Sheriff High said it was exciting last year to have so many community partners bathe their police, fire stations or headquarters in purple light – the County Administration Building, County Police, Bowie Police, Riverdale Park Police, and other municipal agencies, Prince George’s Hospital, Prince George’s Community College and the M-NCPPC Headquarters.

Free purple light bulbs will be available at the ceremony due to the generosity of Presenting Sponsor Pepco. The lightbulbs will be given out at the lighting ceremony and at partner events during the month. Sheriff High said the goal is a simple one: “We want citizens and residents, and businesses and partners to shine a purple light on their porch or in their window during all the nights of October signaling our county’s unity in the fight against domestic violence.”

WHAT: “Purple Light Nights®” Lighting Ceremony

WHERE: Family Justice Center, 14757 Main Street, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772

Beware of Scammers!!

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Sheriff’s Office today said it continues to receive notifications from citizens that have fallen victim to scammers.

Earlier this month our deputies arrested a man for doing unlicensed contractor work, he had scammed a home owner by offering to seal her driveway and charging her over $2400 dollars and all he did was spray paint it. In other calls scammers tell citizens that they owe money to the I.R.S. or have failed to appear for jury duty and that they have to pay a fine via a prepaid card in order to avoid being arrested.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the community that there are absolutely no circumstances under which the Sheriff or any other law enforcement agency would ask citizens to wire or send money on a prepaid card. The Sheriff’s Office advises anyone who receives a call to hang up and then contact the Prince Georges County Police at 301-772-4420 and file an incident report.
