Deputies Arrest First Degree Assault Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff’s Warrant/ Fugitive Division has arrested Bernard Matthews of Lanham, MD on an arrest warrant for First Degree Assault. The warrant was obtained by the Prince George’s County Police Department on July 15, 2014.

According to the warrant, on July 8, 2014, Matthews approached a gas station located in the 10000 block of Greenbelt Road in Greenbelt, MD and observed a General Motors Company (GMC) Envoy engine being stored behind the gas station.  Matthews walked across the street and shortly returned to the gas station driving a Sports Utility Vehicle in which he parked behind the store and took the Envoy engine before driving away. The warrant further states, that Matthews returned to the gas station later that afternoon and approached employees with a box cutter while demanding access to the store’s Closed Circuit Surveillance Video. The employees advised Matthews that they didn’t have access to the video and he fled prior to the police’s arrival.

On July 15, 2014, Warrant/ Fugitive deputies received the arrest warrant for Matthews and began an investigation into his whereabouts. On the same day, deputies located Matthews in the Emergency Room of a local hospital where he was treated and released for an unrelated medical concern.  Matthews was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.
Matthews is also charged with an additional count of First Degree Assault and Theft: $1,000 to under $10,000.
