Deputies Apprehend Felony Assault Suspect – Close 3 Warrants

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Tuesday of Michael Jenkins, who was on the Prince George’s Crime Solvers Most Wanted list, on separate arrest warrants for Violation of Probation and Failure to Appear for Court, issued by the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, MD, on March 28, 2005.

According to the warrants, Jenkins violated the terms of his probation for handgun charges and failed to appear in court after being charged with eluding law enforcement – arrest warrants for both were issued in 2005.

Deputies investigating the whereabouts of Jenkins received an anonymous tip Tuesday, stating that Jenkins was located in a building on Old Marlboro Pike, Upper Marlboro, MD. Warrant deputies went to the building, located Jenkins, and apprehended him as he attempted to flee out of a side door.

Deputies conducting a search of Jenkins following the arrest, located, what appeared to be, several packages of marijuana - he was subsequently charged with a Controlled Dangerous Substance violation by the County Police. Deputies also determined that Jenkins had a Felony Assault warrant, obtained by the Maryland State Police on October 9, 2004.

Jenkins was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Violation of Probation, Failure to Appear, First Degree Assault, and has pending Controlled Dangerous Substance charges.

Deputy Key Makes History as Emergency Services Team Basic Training Graduate (Correction)

(Deputy Key is the second female deputy to complete the training, but the first in nearly 30 years)

Upper Marlboro, MD…  Deputy Sheriff Corporal Tiffany Key graduated from Session 29 of the Prince Georges’ County Police Emergency Services Team (EST) Basic Training School on September 21^st.  Corporal Key is the first female Deputy Sheriff in almost 30 years to graduate from EST school, a rigorous and challenging three week course of specialized tactical training.  The first female Deputy graduate was Susan Hoban in 1984, who retired as a Sergeant from the Sheriff’s Office in 1999.  Hoban was also the very first female law enforcement officer in Prince George’s County to graduate from this EST school.

“This is a physically and mentally intense and challenging course and I’m very proud of Cpl. Key’s commitment and dedication in completing this specialty training,” said Chief Assistant Sheriff Colonel Darrin C. Palmer.  “Our communities and country face new challenges that we must confront and for which we must be prepared, so skills development is both a focus and opportunity for us.”

Cpl. Key’s class of 24 was comprised of members from the Prince George’s County Police Department, Laurel City Police Department, Arlington County Sheriff’s Department, Metro Transit Police Department, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police, United States Secret Service, the United States Air Force, and the United States Marine Corps.

“Law enforcement is strengthened by the diversity of perspectives at every level of our work,” said Sheriff High.  “We appreciate the rigor of the course and the work Deputy Key had to do to succeed, but we are also pleased that she has made history again for our agency.”

Cpl. Key said she is proud to have graduated from EST school, admitting that “it was a very long three weeks.”  She will serve on the Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Division team.

Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest First Degree Burglary Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest yesterday of Duane Barnes on an arrest warrant for First Degree Burglary obtained by County Police District V detectives on September 13, 2012.

According to the warrant, Barnes broke into a residence in the 6900 block of Briar Cliff Dr, Clinton, MD, sometime between April 4, and the 9^th of 2012. Barnes allegedly stole $11,975.00 worth of property from the residence, and caused major damage to the exterior of the residence.

Deputies investigating the whereabouts of Barnes were able to make contact with him, and negotiate his surrender. Barnes turned himself in to deputies yesterday, and was transported to the Prince George’s county Department of Corrections for processing.

District V detectives were notified of the arrest Barnes is charged with First and Fourth Degree Burglary, Felony Theft, Malicious Destruction of Property, and Motor Vehicle Theft.

Warrant Division Arrests First Degree Assault Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Friday of Antuane Simms on a First Degree Assault warrant obtained on July 18, 2012 by County Police District IV detectives.

According to the warrant, on May 12, 2012, Simms allegedly assaulted another male with an unknown object after a verbal dispute in the 3100 block of Branch Avenue in Temple Hills, MD.  The warrant further states that Simms fled the scene before police arrived. 

Friday evening, Sheriff’s Deputies heard a lookout broadcast from the county’s Public Safety Communications dispatcher describing a vehicle Simms was thought to be driving. Deputies initiated a traffic stop, on a vehicle fitting the description, at the intersection of Marlboro Pike and Brooks Drive, in Capitol Heights, MD. Simms was identified as the driver and taken into custody. He was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections where he is being held on a No Bond Status. District IV detectives were notified of the arrest.

Simms is also charged with Reckless Endangerment, and Second Degree Assault.

Sheriff High Urges Citizens to Prepare a Vehicle “Emergency Go Kit” during Emergency Preparedness Month

Sheriff Melvin C. High informs county residents to use September as National Preparedness Month - to “Be Informed, Make a Plan, Build a Kit, and Get Involved.”

As First Responders, Law Enforcement Officers are keenly aware of the importance of emergency preparedness. Sheriff High noted that one aspect of preparedness for many families involves having an “Emergency Go Kit” for family vehicles. Preparing an Emergency Go Kit in advance can save precious time if you must evacuate or seek shelter but it can also make a real difference if you’re stuck for long periods in traffic or in a weather emergency.

Two Arrested on Kidnapping and Burglary Warrants

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrests yesterday of Brandon Lee and Terrace Buckman Jr. on arrest warrants for Kidnapping and Burglary, respectively, that were obtained by County Police District V detectives.

According to the Kidnapping warrant obtained by police on August 31, 2012, Lee and Buckman approached a male victim in the 10700 block of Bickford Ave, Clinton, MD, on August 29, 2012, when they were driving by in a blue vehicle. Lee allegedly exited the vehicle, grabbed the victim from behind, and forced him into the backseat of the vehicle.

The warrant further states that the victim observed Buckman reach down to retrieve a handgun, prompting him (the victim) to jump out of the moving vehicle, and run away from the area.

According to the Burglary warrant obtained by police on July 17, 2012, Buckman unlawfully entered the residence of a male victim in the 6800 block of Groveton Dr, Clinton, MD, on May 4, 2012. While in the residence, Buckman allegedly stole $12,400.00 worth of property.

Deputies investigating the whereabouts of Lee and Buckman were led to the 6100 block of Addison Rd, Seat Pleasant, MD, where they were both located and arrested without incident.

District V detectives were notified of the arrests and both suspects were transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections. Lee and Buckman are both charged with Kidnapping, First Degree Assault, and Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony. Additionally, Buckman is also charged with First Degree Burglary and Felony Theft.

Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest Suspect Wanted for “Armed Carjacking”

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest yesterday of Calvin Pettaway on an arrest warrant for Armed Carjacking obtained by County Police District III detectives on September 5, 2012.

 

According to the warrant, on August 9, 2012, Pettaway used a handgun to demand the vehicle of a male victim in the 1000 block of 59^th Ave, Seat Pleasant, MD. The victim complied with the order and Pettaway fled. 

Deputies investigating Pettaway’s whereabouts were led to the 4800 block of Addison Rd, Capitol Heights, MD, where they located and apprehended him without incident.

District III detectives were notified of the arrest and Pettaway was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections - charged with Armed Carjacking, Carjacking, First and Second Degree Assault, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Theft, Motor Vehicle Theft, and Illegal Possession of a Handgun.

Honorary Prince George’s Sheriff’s Deputy from the United Kingdom Visits Sheriff’s Office

Upper Marlboro, MD…  Forty three years ago, in the summer of 1969, Stephen W. Gillham had the pleasure of escorting then Prince George’s County Sheriff William J. Kersey around Windsor Castle and the surrounding area in the Royal County of Berkshire, England.  Sheriff Kersey was visiting the United Kingdom when he met Mr. Gillham, and upon returning to the States he appointed Mr. Gillham an Honorary Deputy Sheriff of Prince George’s County as a token of his appreciation for the informative guided tour.

Mr. Gillham contacted the Sheriff’s Office this summer to say he finally had the opportunity to visit Prince George’s County this year.  While Mr. Gillham has visited the United States before, this was to be his first trip to the east coast, and while planning to visit many historical sites while here, the Sheriff’s Office was a top priority.  “I had always hoped that one day I would visit this County of which I am Honorary Deputy.  It would fulfill a lifetime’s ambition of mine if I had the opportunity to visit the Sheriff’s Office in Upper Marlboro”, said Mr. Gillham. 

Sheriff Melvin C. High and members of the Sheriff’s Office command staff hosted Mr. Gillham, along with his wife Pippa and other family members last Friday.  The group enjoyed lunch with the Sheriff, shared stories, and exchanged tokens.

Sheriff High said, “It was a delight to meet Steve and his family, and certainly an honor to fulfill his wish to finally visit the agency that made him an honorary deputy so many years ago.  Sheriff Kersey extended the international hand of friendship so many years ago; we were pleased and proud to be the extension of his graciousness and to host Mr. Gillham and his family”.

William J. Kersey served as Sheriff of Prince George’s County from 1966 to 1970.

Domestic Violence Joint Warrant Operation Closes 15 Warrants/Arrests 14

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Sheriff’s Office Warrant/Fugitive Division and the Maryland State Police (MSP) conducted a joint warrant operation last Thursday – focused primarily on domestic violence-related crimes - that resulted in the arrest of 14 suspects to close 15 warrants.

Sheriff’s warrant deputies, with MSP Troopers from the College Park and Forestville MSP Barracks, apprehended two suspects on Felony Assault warrants, four for Violations of Peace/Protective Orders, and eight for Misdemeanor Assault.

Lieutenant Colonel Regina Taylor, Commander of the Field Operations Bureau said, “Domestic Violence is a crime and this operation is a continuation of our commitment to working with our state and local partners to keep our county safe. The combined resources for these joint operations help to assure our success.”

The suspects were transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections for processing.

MPD assists Warrant Squad in the Arrest of Armed Robbery Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest yesterday of Howard Wilder Jr. on an arrest warrant for Armed Robbery, obtained by County Police District IV detectives on September 2, 2012.

According to the warrant, Wilder and another suspect used a knife to assault and commit robbery on a male victim in the 3200 block of Branch Avenue, Temple Hills, MD. The warrant further states that they stole approximately $300.00 worth of property from the victim before fleeing the scene.

Deputies investigating Wilder’s whereabouts were led to Wilder’s place of employment in Northwest, Washington D.C., where the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) assisted in taking Wilder into custody. Wilder was transported to the Central Detention Facility, in Washington D.C., where he will be charged as a fugitive from Prince George’s County, Maryland.

District IV detectives were notified of his arrest. Wilder is also charged with Second Degree Assault and Robbery.
