Sheriff Hosts “Purple Light Nights®” Lighting Ceremony Raising Awareness and a Unified Voice Against Domestic Violence

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff is hosting the “Purple Light Nights ®” lighting ceremony on October 1, 2015 to begin Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Sheriff High said the “Purple Light Nights®” lighting ceremony symbolizes a continuing need to raise awareness and a unified voice against domestic violence.  “Purple Light Nights®” is a community event that brings us all together against a crime that we can face as a community,” said Sheriff High.

Purple light bulbs will be provided to guests at the lighting ceremony and at Domestic Violence Intervention Division (DVID) events during the month. “Thanks to our Presenting Sponsor Pepco, we have light bulbs to support our municipalities, college and university, and church partners who joined our effort this year to bathe the county in Purple,” said Sheriff High. “We’re simply asking our friends and neighbors to shine a purple light on their porch or in their window during all the nights of October.”

“My vision keeps growing. I see more municipalities lighting their city halls and police stations, and I see more communities bathed in light, not only in Prince George’s County, but all over Maryland,” said Sheriff High.
