It’s Our 323rd Birthday! Celebrating Our Legacy and Over Three Centuries Serving Prince George’s County, MD (Statement from Sheriff Melvin C. High)

Upper Marlboro, MD… “I am proud to serve as Sheriff of Prince George’s County, MD and it is my honor to serve with the men and women of the agency and to serve the people of this county. Today, as I contemplate the 323rd anniversary of the establishment of this Office on April 22, 1696, I am proud to know that our work will be recorded in the history of this important state office. Looking back over the shared history of this agency, I am reminded of the legacy of service bequeathed to us and around which, I believe, we can be united in purpose and inspired in heart and mind. It is a legacy that anchors the sense of identity and purpose that each of us embodies as we carry out our roles and responsibilities each day.

Over three centuries, the Office of the Sheriff has survived and thrived, suggesting that we are beneficiaries of an agency faithful to its pledge of service to the people of Prince George’s County, MD and resilient in the face of change and adversity. I hope our legacy will be that we were champions for change who improved our agency in ways that strengthened our agency and the county, that we were problem-solvers who served with distinction, that we invested in outstanding people and trained them to best practices policing standards and contributed to the annals of modern policing, that our agency was committed to inclusion and was a reflection of the diversity within our community.

Quite frankly, I hope that citizens know we will always give them our best.”
