Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest Fugitive Attempted Murder Suspect (Assisted by Stamford and Weston, CT Police Departments)

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s Fugitive Apprehension Surveillance Team (FAST) reported the arrest of Jairo Gutierrez-Lopez of Beltsville, MD on an arrest warrant for Attempted First Degree Murder that was obtained by County Police on July 5, 2014.

                        

According to the warrant, Gutierrez- Lopez is alleged to have assaulted a female victim at a residence in the 11000 block of Cherry Hill Rd in Beltsville, MD. The suspect allegedly stab her several times in the upper and lower body as she attempted to break up a physical altercation between him and another female victim, before he fled the residence.   

On July 6, 2014, after receiving the warrant, the FAST deputies began their investigation, exhausting all leads after 11 days of searching for the suspect. Ultimately, a confidential informant came forward with information that the suspect was in Stamford, CT.

With assistance from the Weston Police Department and the Stamford Police Department, FAST deputies located Gutierrez- Lopez at a home in Weston, CT., where he was found painting in an upstairs bedroom. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to a Weston Police Station for processing. He is awaiting extradition back to Prince George's County, MD. The suspect is also charged with Attempted Murder Second Degree, Assault First Degree, two (2) counts of Assault Second Degree, and Dangerous Weapon with the Intent to Injure.

1st Degree Murder Suspects Arrested by Sheriff’s Deputies

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Anthony Carel Wood of Ft. Washington, Md., on two arrest warrants for Attempted First Degree Murder and Assault Second Degree that were both obtained by County Police on June 28 and July 8, 2014.

According to the Attempted Murder warrant, Wood is alleged to have assaulted a female victim at a residence in the 8000 block of Stonesboro Lane in Ft. Washington, Md., by punching, kicking, and biting her while holding a knife to her throat. The warrant further states that during the altercation, Wood cut off all of her clothes and strangled her with her bra, until she passed out. Wood is also alleged to have stood over the victim, dousing her with gasoline as she regained consciousness, and lighting matches that he threw at her but  which went out before they reached the victim, who was able to escape.

Deputies investigating Wood’s whereabouts located him at a residence in the 1700 block of Brightseat Rd. in Landover, Md., where he was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Prince George’s County Police Criminal Investigation Division for processing.  

Wood is also charged with Unauthorized Removal of Property, and Malicious Destruction of Property.

Phone Scam Fraud Alert Citizens Targeted in Fraudulent Phone Calls

Upper Marlboro, MD… Sheriff Melvin C. High said the Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning to the public and urging citizens associations and other community groups to notify their members about a telephone scam that is targeting Prince George’s County residents.

“We are aware of at least two such calls targeting senior citizens,” said Sheriff High. “Getting information out to club members, relatives, friends and neighbors is our best defense against such criminals.” Sheriff High said the most recent phone scam is the same as a scam in Arlington County, Virginia that was reported by the Virginia Sheriff’s Association earlier this year.

According to the Sheriff, the caller accuses the victim of failing to appear for jury duty, that judgments had been filed against them. The caller told the resident that they would be arrested unless the fines were paid immediately using moneypak to pay fines totaling $3,000.

The Sheriff’s Office posted an alert on June 27^th warning citizens of a caller claiming to be from the IRS who said he was making the call for Melvin C. High. “We notified citizens that the Sheriff is not the law enforcement arm of the IRS and does not collect money on its behalf. We urge residents never to provide an address or personal information, and to call Public Safety Communications at 301-352-1200 to report any such activity.

Sheriff High Tells Council - Interagency Cooperation Contributes to Success in Public Safety

Upper Marlboro, MD…Sheriff Melvin C. High, joined all of the other County Public Safety agencies last night in a Public Safety Town Hall meeting convened by the County Council. Each of the County’s public safety agencies, including Corrections, Homeland Security, Fire/EMS, the State’s Attorney’s Office, County Police and the Human Rights Commission, shared information about the successes and challenges facing their agencies.

In closing remarks, after his review of the Sheriff’s  Office successes and challenges facing the, Sheriff High told councilmembers that the focus of the Executive and Legislative Branches of County Government on interagency cooperation among its public safety agencies, “…has directly affected citizens because it has been enormously important to the success we have achieved in public safety.” Sheriff High said that is particularly true with the Sheriff’s Office, County Police and the State’s Attorney because they are partners in the criminal justice system, and Corrections with whom Sheriff’s Deputies work closely every day.

Sheriff High introduced and thanked the Sheriff’s Office command staff and the members of the Sheriff’s Office Citizen Advisory Council for attending.

Sheriff’s 3rd Annual Summer Youth Academy Session I Begins

Upper Marlboro, MD…. Chief Assistant Sheriff Darrin Palmer, Lieutenant Colonel Roccapriore and Captain Nancy Ridgely greeted cadets Monday as the Community Partnership Section started the first of its two Summer Youth Academy (SYA) sessions at Thurgood Marshall Middle School. 

During the two week sessions, Sheriff’s Deputies and Sheriff’s Explorers will engage the cadets in fitness routines, group seminar styled sessions on topics such as etiquette, problem-solving, bullying, good decision making, gangs, substance abuse. In addition, the camp schedule includes  weekly educational and experiential field trips. 

“It is our goal to make sure they leave the D.A.Y. Corps with a better understanding of themselves, good citizenship and law enforcement, and, of course, have some fun while doing so” said Sergeant Paul Washington, SYA Director.

The second session of the Summer Youth Academy is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 21st.
