Deputies Arrest 1st Degree Assault Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence Intervention Division (DVID) has reported the arrest of Dwayne Fountain on an arrest warrant for First Degree Assault, obtained by County Police Detectives on April 26, 2014.

According to the warrant, on April 21^st, Fountain entered a towing company in the 7200 block of Landover Rd, in Landover MD inquiring about his vehicle that had been previously impounded. When employees were assisting other customers, Fountain entered
the storage area of the towing lot and used a spare key to retrieve the impounded vehicle and drove it out of the tow lot without making payment. When a store employee attempted to stop Fountain, he threatened the employee at gunpoint before fleeing. The warrant further states, on the following day members of the District Heights Police Department located Fountain’s vehicle parked in the 6600 block of District Heights Pkwy, bearing stolen license plates.

Deputies investigating Fountain’s whereabouts located him on Monday, April 28^th at the residence where the vehicle was found. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections. 

Fountain is also charged with Theft: Less than $100.00, Theft: Less than $1,000, Handgun in Vehicle, and Handgun on Person.

First Degree Assault Suspects Arrested

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of LaKeysha Walters and Sean Coleman on arrest warrants for First Degree Assault, both warrants obtained by County Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in April 2014 and March 2014, respectively.

According to the Walters warrant, Walters assaulted a male victim by stabbing him with a kitchen knife following a dispute at a residence in the 1400 block of Southern Avenue in Oxon Hill, MD. Both Walters’ and the victim were transported to area hospitals and a warrant was subsequently obtained for Walter’s arrest.

Deputies’ investigation led them to believe Walters was at a residence in Oxon Hill. She was found hiding in a bedroom closet under a large pile of clothing. She was taken into custody and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

She is also charged with Reckless Endangerment and Second Degree Assault.

 

The warrant for Sean Coleman states that in March 2014, Coleman and a male relative became involved in a verbal dispute through a closed door when the victim attempted to retrieve personal items from Coleman’s residence. The warrant further states Coleman opened the door and pointed a black handgun at the victim.

After investigation, Deputies located Coleman at a residence in the 4300 block of Suitland, Md. He was taken into custody and transported to CID.

Coleman is also charged with Second Degree Assault.

Warrant Division Deputies Honored at 37th Annual Valor Awards

Upper Marlboro, MD…Sheriff Melvin C. High and the heads of all of the county’s public safety agencies, including the Police Department, Fire/EMS, Homeland Security and the Department of Corrections, joined County Executive Rushern L. Baker to celebrate the 37^th Annual Public Safety Valor Awards Luncheon to recognize members from each agency for exceptional performance and bravery in service. The Valor Awards Luncheon is a program of the Prince George’s County Public Safety Assistance Program.  

 

Recipients from the Office of the Sheriff were Sergeant Frederick Minor, Corporal Michael Flick and Corporal Thomas Russell, each of whom received a Bronze Medal of Valor for their courage and heroic actions during an attempt to serve an arrest warrant that turned violent.

The details of their actions - read during the ceremony – are as follows:  On October 16, 2013, the deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant on a male defendant in the 8500 block of 14^th Place in Hyattsville Maryland who barricaded himself inside of the residence and armed himself with knives and a hatchet.  He was seen through the windows carrying knives in both hands.  After Pepper Spray was deployed into the residence; the defendant kicked out a window and ran into the back yard.

Sgt. Minor, Cpl. Flick and Cpl. Russell were positioned on the inner perimeter, covering the back and sides of the residence. They immediately realized that the defendant was still wielding knives. Cpl. Flick drew his service weapon and gave loud verbal commands instructing him to drop the knives, but the defendant refused, turned and attempted to flee, but became entangled in heavy brush. Cpl. Russell attempted to subdue the defendant by using his Taser, which proved ineffective because of the heavy brush. The defendant raised a knife above his head and yelled “I’m going to kill you”, while aggressively charging towards the deputies. Sgt. Minor, seeing a partial clearing in the brush between himself and the defendant, deployed his Taser, effectively striking the defendant, causing him to fall to the ground and temporarily immobilizing him, which allowed Cpl. Flick to remove the knife from the defendant’s grasp.

Sgt. Minor, Cpl. Flick and Cpl. Russell, all positioned in the small backyard of the residence, were confronted with a dangerous individual wielding knives and threatening to kill them, but they each remained calm in their attempts to subdue the defendant. The actions and quick thinking of the deputies, even while faced with great personal risk and danger, prevented the defendant from harming himself and others. Their actions resulted in a swift and successful apprehension, earning each deputy the Bronze Medal of Valor.

Sheriff Deputies Arrest Assault Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Timothy Robinson of Hyattsville, MD on an arrest warrant for First Degree Assault. The warrant was obtained by Prince George's Sheriff’s Office Deputies on April 7, 2014.

According to the warrant, on April 6, 2014 Robinson allegedly assaulted a female victim, with whom he was romantically involved, by punching her in the head after breaking into her apartment in the 7400 block of Village Green Terrace in Hyattsville, MD. The warrant further states that Robinson became upset with the victim after she told him to leave her apartment. Robinson is also alleged to have punched a minor child when the child attempted to render aid to his mother.

Robinson was located and apprehended at Prince George’s Hospital in Cheverly, MD where he was being treated for self-inflected wounds he sustained while breaking into the victims residence. He was also charged with Assault Second Degree, Child Abuse Second Degree, Theft: Less $1,000.00, and two counts of Malicious Destruction of Property.

Deputies Arrest Attempted Murder Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Stanley Allen of Hyattsville, MD on an arrest warrant for Attempted 2^nd Degree Murder, which was obtained by County Police on April 2, 2014.

According to the warrant, on March 31, 2014 in the 3500 block of Landing Way, Hyattsville, MD, Allen allegedly attempted to drown a female victim, with whom he has a child.  The warrant states that in the altercation that began with an argument, Allen held the victim’s arm behind her back, causing the victim’s arm to break.  

The Warrant/ Fugitive Division’s investigation located Allen in the 6500 block of Landing Way in Hyattsville, MD. He was taken in to custody without incident. He was also charged with Assault First Degree and Assault Second Degree.

2014 Melvin C. High Scholarship Application Period Opens

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff is proud to announce the opening of the application period for the Fourth Annual Melvin C. High Scholarship program. Each year, Sheriff High awards three scholarships, in the amount of $1,000, to commendable Prince George’s County High School graduating seniors.  The scholarships can be used toward the cost of college tuition, fees or books.  

The Melvin C. High Scholarship was founded by Sheriff High in 2011, with the first seniors receiving awards from the 2011 graduating class.

 Applications for the Melvin C. High Scholarship award will be available in the offices of all Prince George’s County high school guidance counselors, starting April 9^th.  The applications are also available through the link on the front page of the Sheriff’s website at http://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/sites/Sheriff/Resources/Scholarship/Pages/default.aspx

The application submission period will run from April 9, 2014 through May 9, 2014.  Applications will be collected from high school guidance counselors the week after the closing date and application packages mailed to the Office of the Sheriff must be postmarked no later than May 9, 2014.

To be considered, students must be a Prince George’s County resident, submit the required documentation and meet the following criteria:

•         Accepted for admission to an accredited college or university

•         Be involved in community service or extracurricular school activities

•         Have his/her G.P.A documented by the guidance counselor

•         Provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the faculty

•        Complete a one-page essay answering the question: “How will a college education change your life      and your future?”

Submitted applications are reviewed by an Academic Committee and the Scholarship Selection Committee, who will select the 2014 recipients.  Once the awardees are announced, the Office of the Sheriff will make the award available to the college/university at the time of registration.

Deputies Arrest Attempted Murder Suspect

 Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Nelson Rutillo Cruz of Suitland, MD on an arrest warrant for Attempted 2^nd Degree Murder, which was obtained by County Police on April 1, 2014.

 

According to the warrant, on March 31, 2014 in the 4600 block of Lacey Ave, Suitland, MD, Cruz allegedly attacked a male victim with a knife and took his wallet. The warrant states that positive identification of Cruz as the suspect was made because Cruz and the victim lived in the same residence.

The Warrant/ Fugitive Division’s investigation determined that Cruz was in Huntington, MD.  With assistance of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, Cruz was located in the 1600 block of Solomons Island Rd. in Huntington, MD.  Cruz was taken into custody without incident and transported to the District III Police Station. He was also charged with Assault First Degree, Armed Robbery and Assault Second Degree.

Metropolitan Police Department Arrests Sheriff’s First Degree Murder Most Wanted

Metropolitan Police Department arrested Leumas E. White, a Sheriff’s Office Top 10 Most Wanted suspect.  Leumas E. White of Aberdeen, MD. was wanted on a First Degree Murder Warrant which was issued on July 26, 2007.

Child Support Enforcement Arrest Closes 5 Warrants

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Child Support Enforcement (CSE) Division reported the arrest of Lorenzo Gater on five outstanding warrants issued in January and May of 2013. The warrants were issued for Child Support Contempt of overdue support payments totaling $54,945.30.

Upon receipt of the warrants, CSE Deputies made several efforts to contact Gater. “Our previous attempts to contact Mr. Gator to turn himself in to Sheriff’s Deputies were ignored,” said Captain Sharon Saunders, Commander of the Civil Division. “People avoid facing the charges, but turning themselves in gives them a chance to work things out with the court.”

Deputies investigating Gater’s whereabouts located him on April 1, 2014 in the 1900 block of Kent Village Drive in Landover, MD where he was taken into custody and transported to the Prince George’s County Detention Center.

Three Violent Offenders Captured in Joint Warrant Operations

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s Office Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the following violent offender arrests as a result of joint warrant operations with Bowie PD, Glenarden PD, Capitol Heights PD and Colmar Manor PD between March 15 and March 31.

Darius McCoy of Hyattsville, MD was arrested on a warrant for Burglary- First Degree which was taken out by County Police on February 18, 2014. According to the warrant McCoy allegedly broke into a residence in the 1600 Block of Drexel St. Hyattsville, MD. He was also charged with Theft $1,000 to under $10,000, Malicious Destruction of Property/ Value $1,000.  

Deandre Walker of Capitol Heights, MD was arrested on a warrant for Assault First Degree which was taken out by County Police on March 24, 2014. According to the warrant Walker allegedly fired several shots at two men as the two argued outside of his home in the 5700 block of Coolidge St. Capitol Heights, MD. Walker was charged with 2 counts of Assault First Degree, Firearm Use / Felony Violent Crime, and 2 counts of Assault Second Degree.

Keenan Tinsley of Capitol Heights, MD was arrested on an indictment issued by the Grand Jury on March 18, 2014 for Robbery with a Deadly Weapon.  According to the indictment, Tinsley allegedly robbed a male victim and stole his personal property in the 800 block of Queen Dale Court, Capitol Heights, MD. He was also charged with two counts of Robbery, Assault Second Degree, and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery.

“Our recent warrant sweeps resulted in 47 arrests, most of which were misdemeanor warrants.  While violent offender warrants are our priority focus, because those individuals represent the greatest danger to public safety, as the law enforcement arm of the courts, we are focused on the service of all warrants,“ said Deputy Bureau Chief of Field Operations Captain William Mints.

Each of these suspects were transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections for processing.
