Sheriff’s Deputies Add 82 Additional Arrests to Clackamus County DV Sweep

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff (PGSO) reported 82 additional arrests related to the annual Clackamas County National Family Violence Apprehension Sweep that took place on October 21^st of this year.

Captain Mints said he had a lot of confidence in the early investigative work his deputies did preparing for the Clackamas County operation. “We continued to follow up with some addresses and some people turned themselves in after learning that we had been looking for them,” said Mints. “That persistence resulted in our taking another 82 people into custody and closing another 93 warrants.

The Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff was #1 in the country for arrests during this year’s Clackamas County Sweep of all the participating agencies.  These new arrests bring their total to 187 arrests to close 217 warrants.

Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

                                

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff’s Warrant/ Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Ray Clark of Suitland, MD on an arrest warrant for Armed Robbery that was obtained by County Police on November 16^th, 2014.

According to the warrant, on November 14^th Clark and another suspect approached a couple in the 5200 block of Suitland Road, one of which is reported to have displayed a shotgun and demanded the victims’ property.  The warrant further states that one of the victims was struck in the head with the gun, thrown to the ground and beaten. They stole $150.00 and  fled.    

Deputies investigating the warrant learned that Clark, who had been identified as one of the suspects, was being released from an area hospital. The deputies responded to the hospital and Clark was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Upper Marlboro Department of Corrections for processing.

Clark is also charged with Assault First Degree, Robbery, Assault Second Degree, and Theft less than $1000.00.

National Harbor Jack and Jill Teen Mentoring Program Partners with Sheriff

(Donates “Teddy Bears” for Children affected by Domestic Violence)  

Upper Marlboro, MD… Chief Assistant Sheriff Darrin Palmer accepted over 300 Teddy Bears from The National Harbor Chapter of

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. during a ceremony held at the College Park Aviation Museum on Sunday, November 16th. The Teddy Bears were donated to the Office of the Sheriff by the organization’s teen mentoring program and will be used by Deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence Intervention Division (DVID) to comfort small children they encounter during domestic violence 911 calls.

Colonel Palmer, who attended the event, thanked the chapter members and spoke briefly about the importance and lesson of being a good citizen and the joy and example of helping those in need. Colonel Palmer shared the story of  Dr. Seuss’ ‘”Horton Hears a Who” to a group of little ones aged 2-6 years old  before making each of them  an honorary Sheriff’s Deputy. 

“I can’t think of a better example than this. These teens who are themselves in a teen mentoring group are already mentoring the younger children and teaching them the lesson of giving back. They are how we will put an end to domestic violence in our County, because when we teach young people that a good relationship is a safe relationship then we can prevent domestic violence, not just respond,” said Chief Assistant Palmer. 

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2-19, dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty. The National Harbor Chapter is a group of mothers  working to stimulate growth and development by providing a constructive educational, cultural, civic, health, recreational and social programming.

Deputies Arrest Two Suspects on Felony Indictments

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Jaron Johnson on an indictment alleging First Degree Assault. The indictment was issued by the Circuit Court of Prince George's County on October 24, 2014.

 

Upon receiving the indictment, Warrant/Fugitive Deputies began an investigation into Johnson’s whereabouts. Deputies located and arrested Johnson on November 6, 2014 in the 4200 block of Beech Rd in Temple Hills, MD.

The Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division also reported the arrest of Kimberly Barnes on an indictment alleging Theft of property or services with a value of $100,000 or more. The indictment was issued by the Circuit Court of Prince George's County on October 3, 2014.

Upon receiving the indictment, Warrant/Fugitive Deputies began an investigation into Barnes’ whereabouts. Deputies made contact with Barnes who turned herself in to Deputies at the Western District Police Station in Odenton, MD on November 7^th.  She was taken into custody without incident.

Both Suspects were transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Rape 2nd Degree Suspect Arrested

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff’s Warrant/ Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Samuel Davis in Temple Hills, MD on an arrest warrant for Rape 2^nd Degree that was obtained by County Police on October 29, 2014.

According to the warrant, on August 24^th at a location in Forestville, MD, Davis forced an underage juvenile victim to have sex with him. The warrant also states that Davis was known to the victim. 

After receiving a tip, warrant deputies located Davis at a nightclub in the 6400 block of Old Branch Avenue in Temple Hills, MD. Deputies found Davis’s car in the parking lot and after calling for assistance from the Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence Unit (DVID) and PGPD, entered the establishment and located Davis who was taken into custody without incident. Davis was transported to the county police Criminal Investigation Division and custody transferred to the detective.

Davis is also charged with Child Abuse 2^nd Degree, Sex Abuse of a Minor, and Assault 2^nd Degree.

Attempted 2nd Degree Murder Suspect Arrested

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff’s Warrant/ Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Jerome Williams, Jr. of Suitland, MD on an arrest warrant for Attempted Second Degree Murder that was obtained by County Police on March 21, 2013.

According to the warrant, on January 30, 2013, in the 5600 block of Regency Park Court in Suitland, MD, Williams and a male victim had been drinking beer for several hours. They later went to pick up Williams’ girlfriend and Williams began to argue with her. The warrant indicates that when the victim asked to be dropped off at his residence, Williams became enraged, retrieved a blunt tool from his trunk that is believed to be a hammer and struck the victim in the head. The warrant further states that the victim was transported to the hospital where he was treated for serious injuries to the head.  

After receiving the warrant and after extensive investigation, deputies learned that Williams could be located in the 1300 block of Iverson Street in Oxon Hill, MD. Deputies were granted entry into the residence where they found Williams hiding in the bathroom; he was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Upper Marlboro Department of Corrections for processing.

Williams is also charged with Assault 1^st Degree, assault 2^nd Degree, Reckless Endangerment, and Dangerous Weapon Openly with Intent to Injure.

PGSO Domestic Violence Awareness Month Annual Partnership Luncheon

(Closes Month-Long Schedule of Events to Promote Awareness)

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff’s Domestic Violence Intervention Division (DVID) closed a month-long schedule of Domestic Violence Awareness Month events with its annual partnership luncheon Thursday at Sheriff’s Headquarters.

The luncheon was hosted by Denise McCain and Mandrel Birks of WHUR 96.3 FM, with a discussion theme: “Are we asking the right questions? Victim blaming vs. Abuser Accountability.”  

In attendance were over 50 professionals from county and state organizations, including law enforcement, criminal justice agencies and organizations, advocacy groups and service providers. Each of them represented a commitment to victim advocacy, raising awareness about domestic violence and eliminating domestic violence in communities statewide.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Tricia Bent-Goodley, Professor of Social Work and Director of the Doctoral Program at Howard University, spoke briefly on a range of issues and needs in domestic violence and urged guests to think about how those needs can be filled. 

A recognized expert in the area of domestic violence, Dr. Bent-Goodley conducted an independent evaluation of DVID program services in comparison to other law enforcement agencies and industry best practices.  In a 2013 report, she focused on the Special Victim Advocates and the Supplemental Report/lethality assessment used by Deputies responding to an emergency domestic violence call. She called the program a full-service protocol with benefits that should be available countywide.    

“I’m always pleased to be with our partners with whom we do this important work every day,” said Sheriff High. “Together, our goal is to fill the needs of individuals, families and children who are impacted by domestic violence. This luncheon is a time for us to look back over the previous year’s work and to assess our capacity and processes going forward, including how we can prevent domestic violence by make the next generation a safe generation.”

The partnership luncheon is the final event in a month-long schedule of domestic violence events with the message: Domestic Violence Has No Place in Our Community. The events included Information Exchanges in communities, shopping centers and Metro stations to share information and build awareness about domestic violence.  

The Sheriff’s Office also launched “Purple Light Nights” in Maryland - a national domestic violence awareness program now in 23 states, Canada and Guam - with a lighting ceremony in Upper Marlboro.  The ceremony included distributing purple light bulbs and urging every household in the county to display a purple light on their porch or in their window to raise awareness and be a unified voice in the county against domestic violence.

First Degree Assault Suspect Arrested

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff’s Warrant/ Fugitive Division reported the arrest of Akettie Cheek of Hyattsville, MD on an arrest warrant for First Degree Assault that was obtained by County Police on October 27, 2014.

According to the warrant, on October 25^th Cheeks was working at a barber shop in College Park, MD when he and a customer began to argue about payment because the customer was not pleased with a haircut he got from another barber. The warrant goes on to say that the customer said that his barber had agreed that he didn’t have to pay but Cheeks followed him out of the barbershop demanding payment.  The warrant also indicates that Cheeks threatened the customer verbally and with a black semi-automatic handgun he retrieved from a drawer at his barber station.

Upon receiving the warrant on October 27^th, the Deputies’ investigation determined that Cheeks could be located at an address in Greenbelt, MD. The deputies went to the location on October 31^st where Cheeks was apprehended without incident and a handgun fitting the description of the gun seen in the barbershop was also recovered.  Cheeks was transported to the Hyattsville, MD and custody transferred to detectives from county police.

Cheeks is also charged with Assault First Degree, Firearm use Felony Violent Crime, Assault Second Degree, and Handgun on Person.
