2015 Melvin C. High Scholarship Application Period Opens
The Melvin C. High
Scholarship was founded by Sheriff High in 2011, with the first seniors
receiving awards from the 2011 graduating class.
Applications for the
Melvin C. High Scholarship award will be available in the offices of all Prince
George’s County high school guidance counselors, starting March 27th. The applications are also available through
the link on the front page of the Sheriff’s website at

The application submission
period will run from March 27, 2015 through April 27, 2015. Applications will be collected from high
school guidance counselors the week after the closing date and application
packages mailed to the Office of the Sheriff must be postmarked no later than April
27, 2015.
To be considered,
students must be a Prince George’s County resident, submit the required
documentation and meet the following criteria:

Accepted for admission to an accredited
college or university
•
Be involved in community service or
extracurricular school activities
•
Have his/her G.P.A documented by the
guidance counselor
•
Provide a letter of recommendation from a
member of the faculty
•
Complete a one-page essay answering the
question: “How will a college education change your life and your future?”
Submitted applications
are reviewed by an Academic Committee and the Scholarship Selection Committee,
who will select the 2015 recipients.
Once the awardees are announced, the Office of the Sheriff will make the
award available to the college/university at the time of registration.

Warrant/Fugitive Division Felony Arrest Report #PGSO
Attempted
First Degree Murder Suspect Arrested
Upper
Marlboro, MD…The
Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff’s Warrant/Fugitive Division
reported the arrest of Ante Cheeks of Capitol Heights, MD, on an arrest warrant
for Attempted First Degree Murder that was obtained by the Greenbelt City Police
Department (GCPD) on March 20, 2015.
According
to the warrant, on November 2014, Cheeks and the male victim arranged to meet
over the purchase of a phone. During the transaction, they got into the victims’
vehicle; Cheeks is alleged to have pulled a handgun which he fired repeatedly,
striking the victim multiple times in the stomach and leg, after which he fled
the scene.
Deputies’ investigation led them to believe that Cheeks was at a residence in the 200 block of Possum Court in Capitol Heights, MD. On March 20, Deputies knocked on the door and noticed someone they believed to be Cheeks flee out the back door. After a short foot chase, Cheeks was captured and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.
Cheeks is also charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, First and Second Degree Assault, Armed Robbery, Robbery, Firearm use in a Felonious Violent Crime, Reckless Endangerment, Handgun in Vehicle, Handgun on Person, and Theft less than $100.00.
First Degree Assault Suspect Arrested
Sheriff’s deputies
arrested Berry Battle of Washington, DC, who was wanted on an arrest warrant
for First Degree Assault that was obtained by County Police on March 15, 2015.
According to the warrant, in December 2014, Battle
and another male were engaged in an argument that turned physical at a
residence located in the 6800 block of Farmer Drive in Fort Washington, MD.
Battle retrieved an edged weapon from his kitchen and struck the victim,
penetrating his stomach. An investigation developed Battle as the suspect and a
warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest.
On March 20, 2015, Deputies searched for Battle at the address of the incident. An occupant of the home allowed deputies to enter the residence where they located Battle in his bedroom. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Sheriff’s Office Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the following felony
arrests:
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Nathaniel
Osborne of Clinton, MD, on an arrest warrant for Attempted First Degree Murder
that was obtained by County Police on March 5, 2015.
Osborne is alleged to have assaulted a male victim in front of a restaurant in the 8000 block of Woodyard Road in Clinton, MD. According to the warrant, Osborne and a male victim (who was his mother’s boyfriend) were involved in a verbal altercation. When the victim attempted to walk into the restaurant, Osborne allegedly produced a pocket knife and swung the knife three times towards the victim, cutting his chin, chest, collarbone and stomach. Osborne fled the scene prior to the police’s arrival.
On March 19th, Sheriff’s deputies located Osborne at a residence in the 8400 block of Echo Lane in Clinton, MD. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the District IV Police Station.
Osborne is also charged with First and Second Degree Assault, Dangerous Weapon/Conceal, Intent to use a Dangerous Weapon, and Reckless Endangerment.

Sheriff’s Office Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the following felony
arrests:
Sheriff’s Deputies
arrested Deonne Mathis of Hyattsville, MD, who was wanted on an arrest warrant
for Second Degree Child Abuse obtained by County Police on February 24, 2015.
According
to the warrant, Mathis and another individual abused a female victim at a
residence in the 2000 block of Columbia Place in Landover, MD, on November 1,
2014.
On March 12, 2015, the deputies’ investigation determined that Mathis could be found at the home where the incident occurred. When deputies responded to the address they spotted the suspect through a kitchen window. Deputies knocked on the door and she identified herself. Mathis was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Warrant/Fugitive Division Felony Arrest Report #PGSO
Upper Marlboro, MD...The Sheriff's Office Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the following felony arrest.
Burglary First Degree Suspect Arrested
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Daniel Weiner of Capitol Heights, MD, on an arrest warrant for First
Degree Burglary that was obtained by the Prince George’s County Police
Department on February 10, 2015.
According to the warrant, On June 26,
2010, a home was burglarized in the 5000 block of Rugged Lane in Capitol Heights,
MD. During the burglary, Weiner cut himself while entering the home which left
his DNA as evidence.
On February 24, 2015, deputies’
investigation led them to the residence of a friend in search of Weiner. An
occupant of the home allowed the deputies to enter the residence where they
located Weiner hiding in the master bedroom. He was taken into custody without
incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.
Weiner is also charged with Third Degree
Burglary, Theft less than $10,000 and Malicious Destruction of Property.
Attempted
First Degree Murder
According to the warrant, Daniels got into
an argument with a friend over the purchase of cigarettes. During the altercation, Daniels took out a
pocket knife and stabbed the man in the chest. Deputies attempted multiple
times to locate Daniels and left contact information. On March 1st, Daniels
called the Sheriff’s Office and after speaking with deputies, turned himself in
at the County Department of Corrections (DOC) for processing.
Daniels is also charged with First and Second
Degree Assault.

Warrant/Fugitive Division Felony Arrest Report #PGSO
Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s
Office Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the following felony arrests.
Assault
First Degree
Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Ana
Guardado, of Laurel MD, who was wanted on an arrest warrant for Assault First
Degree that was obtained by Greenbelt Police on
November 12, 2014. According to the warrant, Guardado forced her way into her
ex-husbands apartment, where she assaulted him. Deputies investigating the
warrant determined that Guardado could be located in the 11000 block of South
Laurel Drive, in Laurel, MD. The deputies went to the residence, arrested Guardado
without incident and transported her to the Prince George’s County Department
of Corrections (DOC) for processing.
Guardado is also charged with Assault Second
Degree.
Attempted
First Degree Murder
Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Donte Watson,
of Oxon Hill, MD, who was wanted on an arrest warrant for Assault First Degree
that was obtained by County Police on January 28, 2015. According to the
warrant, Watson engaged in a verbal altercation with his girlfriend. At some point during the altercation, Watson put
his vehicle in reverse and struck the woman and fled the scene. Deputies
investigating Watson’s whereabouts made attempts to locate him at a residence
in Clinton MD. On February 18, 2015, he turned himself in to the Prince
George’s County Department of Corrections (DOC) for processing.
Watson is also being charged with
Assault Second Degree
