Warrant/Fugitive Division Felony Arrest Report

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s Office Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the following felony arrests:

                                               Robbery Suspect Arrested
 

Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Coloshus Haynes, of Oxon Hill, MD on an arrest warrant for Robbery obtained by County Police on May 25, 2016.

 

According to the warrant, on May 8^th, Haynes was in the 6300 block of Livingston Road in Oxon Hill, MD where he was allegedly involved in a hit and run accident involving a pedestrian. According to the warrant the victim stated that Haynes had purchased flowers from him earlier and came back a few minutes later and asked if he had change for a $100 dollar bill. When the victim tried to hand him the change Haynes grabbed the money and began to drive away with the victim’s arms still inside the window. The victim was transported to the local hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.

The warrant was received on May 25th and deputies’ investigation led them to an address in the 1100 block of Kennebec Street in Oxon Hill, MD. Deputies went to the location at which Haynes answered the door. He was advised of the open warrant for his arrest, taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Haynes is also charged with Con-Robbery, Assault First Degree, Assault Second Degree, and Theft less than $1000.

Attempted First Degree Murder Suspect Arrested

Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Vincent Murrill, of Oxon Hill, MD on an arrest warrant for Attempted First Degree Murder that was obtained by the County Police on June 24, 2016.

The Warrant states that on June 23^rd, Murrill was in the 900 block of Marcy Avenue in Oxon Hill, MD when he was in an argument that turned physical.  According to the warrant Murrill allegedly placed the person in a head lock taking the victim down to the floor and began to strangle the victim. Murrill released the victim and left the scene when witnesses yelled at him and banged on the door.

On June 24^th, a warrant for Murrill was received by the Sheriff’s Office and deputies’ investigation determined that Murrill could be located at his work address on Auth Road, in Marlow Heights, MD. Deputies went to the location and found Murrill at work. He was advised of the warrant, taken into custody without incident and transported to Prince George’s County Police Departments District 3 for questioning.

Murrill is also charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, and False Imprisonment.

Warrant/Fugitive Division Felony Arrest Report

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s Office Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the following felony arrests:

   Armed Robbery Suspect Extradited

Sheriff’s deputies extradited John Newson to Prince George’s County, MD on June 10, 2016 from the Hazelton Federal Correction Institution in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. Newson, who is from Glenn Dale, MD, was wanted on an arrest warrant for Armed Robbery issued by the District Court of Prince George's County on May 14, 2015.

According to the warrant, on May 07, 2015, in the 7400 block of Annapolis Road in Hyattsville, MD, at a local gas station, Newson allegedly approached a man employed at the gas station, pointed a handgun at him and ordered him to open the cash registers and lay down on the floor. In fear for his life, the victim removed approximately $500.00 from the registers and gave Newson an unknown number of lottery tickets, after which he fled.

Newson is also charged with Robbery, First and Second Degree Assault, Firearm Use/Felony Violent Crime, Handgun on Person, Handgun in Vehicle and Theft less than $1000.

Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Steven Wright of Oxon Hill, MD, on an arrest warrant for Armed Robbery obtained by the County Police on May 6, 2016.

According to the warrant, on May 04, 2015, in the 500 block of Wilson Bridge Drive in Oxon Hill, MD, Wright and four other suspects called to have a pizza delivered. According to the warrant, Wright allegedly placed the order planning to rob the delivery person. The warrant further states that when the delivery man arrived, Wright is alleged to have pointed a gun at him, demanding his property and money, including the pizza. The suspects fled the scene.

Upon receipt of the warrant, deputies made several attempts to locate Wright, including leaving their contact information with a family member who advised Wright to turn himself in. Wright arranged to meet with deputies and was taken in to custody without incident.  He was transported to the Upper Marlboro Department of Corrections for processing.

Wright is also charged with Robbery, First and Second Degree Assault, and Theft less than $1000.

Attempted First Degree Murder Suspect Arrested #PGSO

Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Darshieda Thompson, of Seat Pleasant, MD on an arrest warrant for Attempted First Degree Murder obtained by the Seat Pleasant Police on June 20^th, 2016.

According to the warrant, on June 18^th, Thompson was in the 6400 block of Greig Street in Seat Pleasant, MD when she became involved in a verbal dispute over a cell phone.  According to the warrant Thompson allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed a man in his hand. The victim fled the apartment along with his teenage son and left in his vehicle. Thompson is alleged to have pursued them in her SUV and intentionally rear-ended their vehicle before fleeing the scene.

On the day the warrant was issued deputies determined that Thompson was at the location in Seat Pleasant listed on the warrant. When deputies went to the address Thompson opened the door and was informed of the warrant. She was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Thompson is also charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, Assault First Degree, Assault Second Degree, Dangerous Weapon with Intent to Injure, and Malicious Destruction of Property.

Attempted First Degree Murder Suspect Arrested

Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Dometries Cobb, of Seat Pleasant, MD on an arrest warrant for Attempted First Degree Murder that was obtained by the County Police on June 20^th, 2016.

                                                                  

The Warrant states that on June 19^th, Officers were approached in the area of Addison Road South and Duel Place by a man who advised them of a shooting in the 6600 block of Greig Street in Seat Pleasant, MD. Officers were able to locate the crime scene and a witness who stated Cobb and her brother had a physical altercation when Cobb pulled out a gun and shot the victim, her brother, once in the abdomen before leaving the scene.

On June 20^th, a warrant for Cobb was received and deputies’ investigation determined that Cobb could be located at the address of the incident in Seat Pleasant, MD. Upon arrival at the location Cobb answered the door and was advised of the warrant and taken into custody. She was transported to the Prince George’s County Regional Processing Unit in Hyattsville without incident.

Cobb is also charged with First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, and Firearm use in a Felonious Violent Crime.

Attempted First Degree Murder Suspect Arrested #PGSO

 Sheriff’s Deputies arrested D’Andre Layne, of Laurel, MD on an arrest warrant for Attempted First Degree Murder obtained by County Police on May 23^rd, 2016.

According to the warrant, on May 19^th, county police responded to a report of gunshots in the 9200 block of Cherry Lane in Laurel, MD. Upon arrival police met with a victim who had been shot in the hand and another who was suffering lacerations from shattered glass. One victim said that while stopped at a stop sign two people ran across the street and started shooting at them. The warrant further states that a victim recognized one of the shooters as someone from the neighborhood known as “Dre”.

Upon receipt of the warrant, deputies began an investigation that led them to believe that Layne was at a location in Virginia. After reaching Virginia law enforcement, deputies were notified by the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office that Layne was in custody. Layne was transported to the local jail and extradited back to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Layne is also charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, Assault First Degree, Assault Second Degree, and Use of an Assault Weapon with a Magazine.

Attempted First Degree Murder Suspect Arrested

Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Freddie Ruiz, of Hyattsville, MD on an arrest warrant for Attempted First Degree Murder that was obtained by the County Police on June 14, 2016.

The Warrant states that on June 13^th, Ruiz became involved in an argument via phone after which he drove to a residence in Takoma Park, MD where he pointed a gun at the person with whom he’d argued. Ruiz is alleged to have also pointed the gun and fired above the head of another person at the residence who began to argue with him. According to the warrant Ruiz pointed the gun back at the first victim, he then pointed the gun and fired a second shot up in the air and waved the gun back and forth before leaving the scene.

On June 14^th, a warrant for Ruiz was received by the Sheriff’s Office and deputies were notified by authorities that he had attempted to purchase a firearm locally the day after the incident. Deputies’ investigation determined that Ruiz could be located in the 2000 block of Hayden Road in Hyattsville, MD. Upon arrival at the location they advised the resident that they had a warrant for Ruiz who was located at the residence. He was placed into custody and transported to the Prince George’s County District I Police Station without incident.

Ruiz is also charged with First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, and Firearm use in a Felonious Violent Crime.

Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run Opening Ceremony Kicks-Off Prince George’s 1st Leg Hyattsville-College Park

Upper Marlboro, MD… Sheriff Melvin C. High joined Hyattsville City Chief of Police Douglas Holland, along with Prince George’s County Assistant Police Chief Hector Valez and other law enforcement officers from agencies throughout the region Wednesday, June 8^th, at a ceremony to begin the Prince George’s County leg of the Maryland Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Maryland.

 Chief Holland, who chairs the Law Enforcement Torch Run, said “It’s heartwarming to see how the Prince George’s County Public Safety Community supports the 7,200 Special Olympics Maryland athletes and their coaches and families.” Thanking each of the agencies for their commitment and participation with Special Olympics, Chief Holland said the Torch Run ends with the final leg of the race at 6:00 p.m. today when the Flame of Hope opens the Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games at Towson University where it will burn throughout the weekend.

Sheriff High said he continues to be proud of the role that law enforcement has played in the growth of Special Olympics. “I’m still and always deeply moved when I see the joy on the faces of athletes who are delighted by the thrill of competition and accomplishment,” High said

The Olympic Flame was presented at the ceremony by six athletes led by Prince George’s County Olympian Ryan Martin.

The Special Olympics Torch Run began as an idea of Witchita, Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon who, in 1981, wanted to involve law enforcement in Special Olympics to raise money. The idea was embraced three years later by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the project took off. The IACP’s support encouraged involvement of the law enforcement community to include organizations at every level of government.

2016 Melvin C. High Scholarship Awards Presentation (Guest Speaker: 2013 Winner/UMD Junior Dariya Brown)

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Prince George’s County Office of the Sheriff held the Sixth Annual Melvin C. High Scholarship awards ceremony last Thursday to announce the 2016 scholarship winners. The 2016 Melvin C. High Scholarship winners, who were joined by family and friends at the ceremony, are Helen Cordero, a graduate of High Point High School, Omar Green, a Potomac High School graduate, and Jenelle Collier, a Surrattsville High School graduate.

The Melvin C. High Scholarship was founded by Sheriff High in 2011 – his first year in office - and is funded by the Sheriff. Award recipients are selected from a list of ten finalists who were selected from nearly 70 applicants this year. The “Final Selection Committee” of three judges and an alternate reviews the finalists’ applications making a decision based not only on academic excellence but also on their involvement in other activities such as school, neighborhood and church communities, as well as athletics, the arts and community outreach.

Applauding the 2016 winners and scholars from previous years Sheriff High said, “I’m asking each of you to redouble your academic efforts to become the smartest people ever. Now is your time to be a part of humanities greatest generation.”

The special guest speaker for the ceremony was Ms. Dariya Brown, a University of Maryland rising senior with a double major in Sociology and Government and Politics, and a 2013 Melvin C. High Scholar. Ms. Brown shared insights about college life and advised the scholarship winners to enjoy the college experience, and encouraged them to ask for help and take advantage of campus resources.
Ms. Brown said she is looking forward to her senior year and plans to pursue a graduate degree in Public Policy.


Each Melvin C. High Scholarship winner is awarded $1,000 payable to the student and the college of his choice. Ms. Cordero plans to attend Howard Community College majoring in the Social Sciences; Omar Green will attend Prince George’s Community College with a major in Environmental Studies; Ms. Collier will attend Ohio Wesleyen University where she will major in Neuroscience & Genetics.

Warrant/Fugitive Division Felony Arrest Report #PGSO

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Sheriff’s Office Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the following felony arrests:

Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Marcus Slade of Greenbelt, MD on an arrest warrant for Armed Robbery obtained by Greenbelt Police on April 26th, 2016.

According to the warrant, on March 5th, a man walking in the 5900 block of Cherrywood Terrace in Greenbelt MD was approached by another man who asked him for a cigarette; he told the person he didn’t have any and continued walking but the man asked again for a cigarette. The first man noticed three people coming up the foot path toward him when the suspect grabbed him from behind, began choking him while holding a knife to his neck while the other three began to kick and punch him. The victim said the person who asked for the cigarette stole his cell phone and attempted to take his wallet. The victim said a witness yelled from her apartment and the suspects fled. Upon receipt of the warrant the deputies’ investigation led them to an address in the 6000 block of Springhill Drive in Greenbelt, MD where they observed the suspect sitting in front of the residence. When questioned, Slade identified himself and was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

Slade is also charged with Robbery, Assault First Degree, Assault Second Degree, and Theft less than $1000.

Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

  Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Gordon Cummings of Silver Spring, MD on an arrest warrant for Armed Robbery that was obtained by the County Police on May 10, 2016.

According to the warrant, on August 8, 2015, Cummings and three other suspects approached a male victim in the 900 block of Edwards Way in Hyattsville MD as he walked home from the bus stop. Cummings is alleged to have displayed a handgun demanded the man’s property, which he gave them. The suspects fled the scene.

On May 26, Cummings had a court date at the Silver Spring Courthouse. Sheriff Deputies’ were notified by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department that the suspect would be detained. Cummings was released to Prince George’s County Sheriff’s deputies and transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections in Hyattsville, Md.

Cummings is also charged with First Degree Assault, Firearm use and Felony Violent Crime and Theft less than $1000.
