Deputies Participate in 25th Annual Christmas in April

Upper Marlboro, MD… Chief Assistant Sheriff Darrin C. Palmer joined deputies, correctional officers and community volunteers Saturday for the 25^th Annual Christmas in April program at a residence in Landover, MD. 

Volunteers painted the interior and exterior of the residence, cut and trimmed trees and hedges, mulched flower beds and cut grass. A team of volunteers went to the home in the weeks leading up to Saturday’s event to make repairs to the electrical wiring of the home.

Sheriff Melvin High, who was on hand to meet the homeowners, said, “The Christmas in April concept has endured for so many years from its beginning in 1973, and this year marks the 25^th year here in the County. We’ve made a lot of people happy since then, and have gone home tired and happy ourselves. It’s good work and it’s a joy.”

More than 25 volunteers participated in Saturday’s day of service; contributing to thousands of dollars worth of repairs and upgrades to the residence.

Deputies Honored at 36th Annual Public Safety Valor Awards

Upper Marlboro, MD… Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker III joined Sheriff Melvin C. High, Fire Chief Marc Bashoor, Police Chief Mark Magaw and Department of Corrections Director Mary Lou McDonough Wednesday at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, MD, for the 36^th Annual Public Safety Valor Awards.

Three Sheriff’s Deputies were honored with the Silver Medal of Valor for heroic efforts that helped save the lives of a Capitol Heights family. Corporal Daniel Hardester and Privates Ricardo Dennis and Dwayne Stevenson were on the scene of a domestic violence call when they heard screams for help coming from across the street.

They noticed smoke coming from the rear of a single-family home and, without hesitation, entered the residence to search for occupants. The deputies safely evacuated three children and an adult from the residence, preventing a potentially tragic situation.

Corporal Mauricio Casanova was awarded the Gold Medal of Valor and Deputy Sheriff of the Year for his bravery and decisive actions during an April 2012, shooting. Casanova, along with members from the Sheriff’s Landlord and Tenant Division responded to a residence in Hyattsville to execute a court ordered eviction. As deputies attempted to enter the residence they were met with resistance from the homeowner, and the situation turned volatile.

Fearing for their safety, deputies discharged their firearms as they moved to positions of cover. As shots were fired, Casanova noticed the locksmith, who had been on the scene to assist deputies with entry into the home, scrambling to get out of the line of fire. Casanova, without regard for his own personal safety, left his position of cover, ran to the locksmith and covered him with his own body until the shooting stopped.

Sheriff High, the President of this year’s Public Safety Valor Awards, said, “The four Deputies honored today represent the very best of the law enforcement profession. I commend them for their brave and heroic efforts, and I salute all of today’s honorees who have dedicated themselves to serving others.”

Sheriff High Joins Comptroller Peter Franchot in College Park, MD

Sheriff High and Chief Assistant Sheriff Palmer joined Comptroller Peter Franchot as he presented the College Park Volunteer Fire Department with a Proclamation in recognition of their dedication and exemplary service to the local community.

Deputies Arrest Attempted Murder Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Monday of Antonio Jones on a warrant for Attempted 2^nd Degree Murder obtained by County Police District IV officers on April 6^th, 2013.

According to the warrant, Jones was involved in an argument with a female victim in the 700 block of Cady Dr. in Oxon Hill MD, on April 6, 2013. Following the argument, Jones entered the driver’s side of his vehicle, subsequently striking the victim with the vehicle and running over her.

Deputies investigating the whereabouts of Jones were led to a residence in the 1900 block of Glendora Dr. in District Heights, MD, where they located and arrested him without incident.

District IV detectives were notified of the arrest and Jones was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder and First Degree Assault.

Deputies Close 3 Warrants with Arrest of Failure to Appear/Violation of Probation Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Thursday of Melsun Perry on multiple arrest warrants for Violation of Probation (VOP) and Failure to Appear (FTA), issued by the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, MD, on December 20, 2012.

According to court documents, two warrants were issued for Perry for FTA for Destruction of Property and another issued for VOP for Illegal Transportation of a Handgun. Perry also had a Grand Larceny warrant from Fairfax County, Virginia.

Deputies, with assistance from the US Marshals Joint Warrant Task Force, located and apprehended Perry at a residence in the 6000 block of Hil Mar Dr. in Forestville, MD.

The Circuit Court for Prince George’s County was notified of Perry’s arrest and he was transported to the Prince George’s County Detention Center – charged with Failure to Appear Destruction of Property and Violation of Probation for Illegal Transportation of a Handgun.

Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest Felony Theft Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Wednesday of Charles Dawson on an arrest warrant for Felony Theft Scheme issued by the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, MD, on April 3, 2013.

Dawson was indicted by a Prince George’s County Grand Jury on charges of Theft Scheme, Conspiracy to commit Theft Scheme and Forgery of Private Documents. Dawson allegedly committed the crimes between December 30, 2011 and April 20, 2012.

Deputies investigating the whereabouts of Dawson were led to the Bowie, MD, area where they located him travelling in a vehicle; they initiated a traffic stop, and took him into custody without incident.

The Circuit Court was notified of Dawson’s arrest and he was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Felony Theft Scheme, Conspiracy to commit Theft Scheme and Forgery of Private Documents.

Melvin C. High Scholarship Applications Available

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Sheriff’s Office announced the opening of the application period for the 2013 Melvin C. High Scholarship award. Three scholarships, in the amount of $1,000 toward the cost of tuition and fees or books, are awarded to deserving Prince George’s County High School graduating seniors. This year’s award is the third annual award. 

 Applications for the Melvin C. High Scholarship award are available in the offices of all Prince George’s High School Guidance Counselors and are available through the link on the front page of the Sheriff’s website at http://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/Sheriff.

The Melvin C. High Scholarship was founded in the Office of the Sheriff by Sheriff Melvin C. High in 2011, with the first seniors receiving awards from the 2011 graduating class. “Our goal is to recognize the well-rounded student, not just the academic achiever,” said Sheriff High.

The application closing date is May 10, 2013. Applications will be collected from high school guidance counselors during the week after the closing date; application packages mailed to the Office of the Sheriff must be postmarked no later than May10, 2013.

A Scholarship Committee reviews all applications to pick the recipients.  Once the winners are announced, the Office of the Sheriff makes checks available to the college/university at the time of registration.  In order for an application to be considered, in addition to being a Prince George’s County resident, the student must be:

·         Accepted for admission to an accredited college or university

·         Be involved in community service or extracurricular school activities

·         Have his/her G.P.A documented by the guidance counselor

·         Provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the faculty

·         Complete a one-page essay answering the question: “How will a college education change your life and your future?

Special Olympics Torch Run Kicks Off Bowie Baysox Season

Upper Marlboro, MD… Sheriff Melvin C. High, Chief Assistant Darrin Palmer and members of the Sheriff’s Office joined other law enforcement partners last Thursday at the Bowie Baysox Stadium for the Special Olympics Torch Run, which took place before the team’s home opening game.  

The Special Olympics Torch Run, also known as the Law Enforcement Torch Run, took place during the Baysox’s pregame activities. Officers who participated in the run were joined by Special Olympians as they ran the perimeter of the stadium.

Chief Assistant Sheriff Darrin Palmer, who participated in the Torch Run said,” It’s always a great time participating in Special Olympics events. The Torch Run is a proud tradition in the law enforcement community and what a great opportunity for the athletes to provide the pre-game activities, get a bit of a workout, then watch the game.”

Special Olympics aquatics athlete Heather Brow of Bowie had the special treat and duty of throwing out the first pitch to start the game. Heather threw a very impressive pitch, which was caught by the Baysox catcher.

Sheriff High, who congratulated Heather after the opening pitch said, “I am always pleased by the commitment of agency personnel who are always willing to go the extra mile to support the Special Olympians. Whether participating in the Torch Run or jumping into the Chesapeake Bay for the Polar Bear Plunge, I know our deputies look forward to these events almost as much as the athletes do. ”

Office of the Sheriff Employees Honored at Annual Awards Banquet

Sheriff Melvin C. High, along with members of the Sheriff’s Office command staff, honored the outstanding performance of current and retired deputy sheriffs and civilian employees, at the 2013 Awards Ceremony and Retirement Celebration held Friday at the La Fontaine Bleue in Lanham, MD.  William D. Missouri, Retired Chief Judge of the 7^th Judicial Circuit, delivered the keynote address to the members in attendance. Corporal Mauricio Casanova was honored as the 2012 Deputy Sheriff of the Year, while Mrs. Angie Raffo earned Civilian of the Year honors.

Critical Missing Person

The Prince George’s County Police Department seeks the public’s assistance in finding a critical missing person identified as 69-year-old Timothy John Fowler.

He was last seen on April 8, 2013, at Joseph A. Gilmore Adult Care located in the 600 block of Largo Road in Largo. Fowler suffers from dementia and may be in need of medication.

Fowler is described as a Caucasian male, 5’10”, 160 pounds, with brown eyes and gray hair. He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, black leather jacket, black and gray sweater, blue jeans and black tennis shoes.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Regional Investigation Division-Central (District II) at (301) 390-2100.

Deputies Close 4 Warrants with Arrest of Drug Possession Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Thursday of Kirk Price on multiple arrest warrants for failure to appear in court for drug charges, second degree assault and violation of probation, issued by the Circuit Court of Prince George’s County, MD, on November 9, 2012.

 

Deputies investigating Price’s whereabouts were led to a residence in the 3800 block of St. Barnabas Rd. in Suitland, MD, where they located and arrested him. Following the arrest, deputies discovered a large amount of suspected marijuana and methylenedioxymethamphetam
ine (MDMA) capsules, a Mac-eleven machine pistol with ammunition, $7, 062.00 in U.S. currency, and a digital scale.

Deputies contacted the County Police Narcotics Enforcement Division who responded and took over the drug investigation.

The Circuit Court for Prince George’s County was notified of Price’s arrest and he was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Failure to Appear, Second Degree Assault, and Violation of Probation. Additional charges are pending in the related narcotics possession case.

Sheriff Joins Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. at White House Gun Violence Reduction Event

Sheriff Melvin C. High joined Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. yesterday in urging Congress to act on legislation aimed at reducing gun violence. Sheriff High, an invited guest of the Vice President, made opening remarks to an audience of mostly Law Enforcement executives from around the country before introducing the Attorney General. The Attorney General and the Vice President urged Congress to act on gun legislation aimed at the implementation of universal background checks for the purchase of guns. Following the press conference, Sheriff High was invited to Vice President Biden’s Office for more discussion on the legislation.

Sheriff Specialized Services Team/Bladensburg PD Arrest First Degree Burglary Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD…  The Sheriff’s Specialized Service Team (SST) Deputies, assisting the Bladensburg Police Department Criminal Investigation Division (CID) arrested Eric Ehimo on March 26, 2013, for a First Degree Burglary arrest warrant received by the Office of the Sheriff on March 23. The joint operation included execution of a search warrant obtained on March 25 by the Bladensburg Police at a location in the 4200 block of 58^th Avenue in Bladensburg, MD.

According to the warrant, on or about March 13, 2013 Ehimo did break and enter an address in the 5800 block of Annapolis Rd, Bladensburg, MD and stole property valued at more than $1,000 but less than $10,000.

Chief Charles Owens, chief of the Bladensburg Police Department said, “We believed this individual was involved in a number of burglaries in our community and that he presented a danger. Ensuring a safe entry and arrest was my first priority; working with the Sheriff’s Specialized Service Team was our best opportunity to assure that outcome.”

According to Chief Owens, property obtained at the location has been identified from a number of burglaries in Bladensburg. “With this and other related arrests, I believe we have put a dent in an expansive burglary ring and multiple “Breaking and Entering” crimes which seriously impact the quality of life for the citizens of my city.”

Deputies Arrest Felony Drug Distribution Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Thursday of Dominic Dixon on an arrest warrant for Failure to Appear, issued by the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, MD, on December 20, 2012.

According to the warrant, Dixon failed to appear in court for the charges of Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) With Intent to Distribute, Possession of CDS, Delivering Drug Paraphernalia, and a traffic violation.

Deputies investigating Dixon’s whereabouts were led to an address in the 6100 block of Westchester Park Dr. in College Park, MD, where they located and apprehended him without incident.

The Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, MD, was notified of Dixon’s arrest and he was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Failure to Appear.

Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest Armed Robbery Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Friday of Jabria Weaver on an arrest warrant for Armed Robbery obtained by County Police District I detectives on February 27, 2013.

According to the warrant, Weaver and a male suspect were in the 7000 block of Powhatan St. in New Carrollton, MD, on February 25, 2013, when they approached another male and demanded his shoes. Weaver, who was wearing a ski mask at the time of the robbery, had her hand under her shirt implying that she had a weapon. The victim, fearing for his life, relinquished his shoes to the suspects before they fled the scene.

Deputies investigating Weaver’s whereabouts were led to the 5800 block of Nystrom St. in New Carrollton, MD, where they located and apprehended her without incident.

District I detectives were notified of Weaver’s arrest and she was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Armed Robbery, Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery, Robbery, Misdemeanor Theft and Conspiracy to Commit Misdemeanor Theft.

Deputies Close 6 Warrants With Arrest Felony Theft Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Wednesday of Marcus Robinson on an arrest warrant for Felony Theft, obtained by County Police District II detectives on March 27, 2013.

According to the warrant, Robinson broke into a vehicle in the 7200 block of Donnell Pl. in District Heights, MD, on March 19, 2013, and stole a black Glock 29 handgun and its case, four Glock magazines, four 10 millimeter handgun rounds and a black duffle bag. The damage to the vehicle totaled $500.00 and the stolen items had a value of $1,005.00.

Deputies investigating Robinson’s whereabouts were led to the Forestville, MD, area where they conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle he was operating and took him into custody without incident.

District II detectives were notified of Robinson’s arrest and he was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Felony Theft, Rogue and Vagabond and Malicious Destruction of Property. 5 additional warrants were closed with Robinson’s arrest

2006 Attempt First Degree Murder Suspect Arrested in Joint Warrant Operation

Upper Marlboro, MD… Upper Marlboro, MD…The Prince George’s Warrant Operations Division in partnership with Maryland State Police (MSP) reported the arrest on April 2, 2013 of Fredy Felipe who was wanted for Attempt First Degree Murder on a warrant issued by the County Police on February 1, 2006.

According to the warrant, on February 1, 2006, Fredy Felipe stabbed another man multiple times about the body and fled. The incident occurred in the 8100 block of 15^th Ave., in Hyattsville, MD. At the time of the investigation, warrant squad deputies seeking Felipe received information that Felipe had moved back to Guatemala. Preparatory investigations for the warrant operation revealed a new address for Felipe, also in Hyattsville, where he was apprehended without incident.

The arrest of Felipe occurred during a countywide joint warrant operation that was primarily focused on Driving-Related and Driving Under the Influence (DUI) warrants. The joint operation attempted service at 160 locations in twenty-nine county communities that resulted in thirty-one arrests, to close 37 warrants; twenty-five of the arrests were Driving –Related or DUI.  The additional single arrests were for Drug Possession, Theft, a Writ of Body Attachment, Malicious Destruction of Property and a Sex Offense.

Lt. Roland Butler, Commander of the Maryland State Police Forestville Barracks said, “This was an extensive countywide operation. The benefit of joint operations is clearly visible; the results ultimately make Prince George’s County safer for every citizen. We are pleased to work with the Sheriff and to provide resource support whenever possible.”

“The additional support from MSP adds enormous capacity to this kind of operation. It is a great working relationship that we value, “said Chief Assistant Sheriff Darrin Palmer.

Deputies Arrest Armed Robbery Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Monday of Auctavius Blackwell on an arrest warrant for Armed Robbery obtained by County Police District III detectives on March 6, 2013.

According to the warrant, Blackwell and four other suspects robbed a male victim on March 1, 2013, in the 1400 block of Nye St. in Fairmount Heights, MD. The suspects approached the victim, produced a knife and handgun, and demanded his coat. Blackwell allegedly stole the victim’s coat and shirt before all suspects fled the scene.

Deputies investigating Blackwell’s whereabouts were led to a residence in the 5000 block of Southern Ave. in S.E., Washington D.C, where they located and apprehended him without incident.

District III detectives were notified of Blackwell’s arrest and he was transported to the 6^th District Station of the Metropolitan Police Department – charged as a Fugitive from Prince George’s County, MD. Blackwell is also charged with Armed Robbery, Robbery, First and Second Degree Assault, and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.

Deputies Arrest Armed Robbery Suspect

Upper Marlboro, MD… The Warrant/Fugitive Division reported the arrest Saturday of Maurice Foreman on an arrest warrant for Armed Robbery obtained by County Police District I detectives on March 19, 2013.

According to the warrant, Foreman approached a male victim in the 2900 block of Allison St. in Mt. Rainier, MD, on March 15, 2013, pointed a black handgun at him and demanded money. As the victim attempted to defend himself, Foreman used the handgun to strike him several times in the face. During the struggle, the defendant was able to move the gun just prior to Foreman firing a shot at him.  District I detectives identified Foreman as a suspect and subsequently sought a warrant for his arrest.

Deputies investigating Foreman’s whereabouts were led to a residence in the 600 block of Eastern Ave. in Washington, D.C, where they located and apprehended him without incident.

District I detectives were notified of Foreman’s arrest and he was transported to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections – charged with Armed Robbery, Robbery, First and Second Degree Assault, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Reckless Endangerment, and Illegal Possession of a Handgun.
